Write It Down

I took this picture the weekend before Labor Day in 2016. My wife and I took our daughter to see the hot air balloons at Callaway Gardens. We had a wonderful time that evening. Less than a week later, I was in the hospital following surgery for a ruptured appendix.

Luckily, my appendix burst while I was in the emergency room. It ruptured between the MRI scan and the operation to remove it. If it had burst earlier, the complications may have been severe, including my death. If I had died, my wife would have had difficulties in managing the aftermath of my death.

At the time, I handled all the bills and dealt with all of our necessary paperwork. My wife did not know the passwords for our bank accounts or credit cards. Further, she would did not know the locations for our insurance packets, mortgage documents, and other important papers.

Upon recovery from surgery, I wrote down all the details that my wife would need to know in case something happens to me. These details include: passwords for our bank accounts, credit cards, and insurance. Additionally, I wrote down where our important documents are located and detailed instructions on who to call for help and their phone numbers.

The unexpected will occur. It is a matter of time. You can be doing everything properly and being careful, but you can still be blindsided by the carelessness of someone nearby. Please take time to write down everything your family needs in order to manage the situation if something happens to you.

Consider the Law Office of Benjamin T. Eidson, LLC for writing your will, trust, advance medical directive, or general legal advice in order to formulate a plan for your piece of mind.
